Classroom Technology Policy
An exciting part of the learning community at NLMUSD is the use of technology in the classroom. The protocol for using electronic media* in my class is as follows:
* Electronic media is defined as items used to broadcast or store media/communications or allows distribution of that media that takes advantage of electronic technology- such as cell phones, tablets, and/or music devices, but may also include new technology as it develops and is determined by the school or district.
**According to the California Education Code (EC 51512):
“The use by any person, including a pupil of any electronic listening or recording device in any classroom without prior consent of the teacher and the Principal/ Administration is prohibited as it disrupts and impairs the teaching process of discipline in the schools. Any person, other than the pupil, willfully in violation shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. Any pupil in violation shall be subject to appropriate disciplinary action.”
- Unless directed otherwise by their teacher, students are required to complete their student agenda in writing using a pen/pencil. All iPad users must clear apps on their iPad immediately after completing their agenda for the day.
- Cell phones must be on silent or off at all times unless directed otherwise by the teacher. Additionally, they cannot be visible. It is strongly recommended that students keep their cell phones in a secure section of their backpack during the school day.
- Students must ensure that iPads/laptops are fully charged every day. Failure to do this will have negative impact on student learning and citizenship due to the inability to participate in class instruction.
- iPads/laptops/electronic media should remain put away until the students are directed to use them by the teacher.
- Students will be responsible for the security of their iPads/laptops including, but not limited to, loaning out their devices to other students or leaving their devices unsupervised.
- Students will stay on task during class. When using electronic media, students will only visit websites and use applications as directed by the teacher. Communications such as texting or using social media is not permitted during the school day.
- All videos/audio recordings/pictures must be taken with teacher permission as well as the consent of the subjects involved.**
- It is expected that students will follow all of the guidelines listed above, including any classroom iPad/electronic media policies implemented by their teacher.
