Classroom Integrity Policy
What is classroom integrity?
Classroom integrity means honesty and responsibility in the classroom. Students and teachers alike must obey rules of honest scholarship, which means that all academic work should result from an individual's own efforts. Contributions from others must be consistently and responsibly acknowledged. Academic work completed in any other way is fraudulent. Furthermore, destroying or taking property that belongs to the school, the teacher, or other students jeopardizes the safe environment of the classroom that all students should enjoy.
What is Mrs. Garcia's policy on classroom integrity?
Mrs. Garcia believes that classroom integrity is essential for true learning to take place. For this reason, cheating, plagiarism, and the destruction or theft of property will not be tolerated.
What is cheating?
Cheating is submitting someone else's work as your own. Some examples of cheating are copying someone else's homework or class work, copying someone's test, talking about test questions during the test or with a student who has not already taken a test, or using materials, such as a teacher's guide, to get answers to assignments. When working in partners/groups, it is cheating to copy each other's work since each student should complete their assignments using their own words and ideas. CHEATING IS THE SAME AS LYING, and can seriously damage your reputation!
What is plagiarism?
Plagiarism is a form of cheating where a student steals or passes off the ideas or words of another as his or her own, or uses another's work without crediting the source. Students who copy information from the internet or from other sources without using the proper references are plagiarizing. This problem is easily avoided by using the MLA format for documenting sources. Students who are concerned about properly referencing sources should see Mrs. Garcia.
What is the destruction or theft of property?
The destruction of property happens when students purposely or negligently damage property that belongs to the school, the teachers, or other students. Destruction can happen on purpose, such as when a student intends to break something, or it can happen as a result of negligence, when a student damages property as a result of breaking classroom rules. Theft occurs when these items are taken without the permission of the property's owner.
What are the consequences for violating the Classroom Integrity Policy?
Students who violate the policy will have several consequences. First, for students who cheat or plagiarize, a "0" will be given for the assignment with no opportunity to make up the grade. A written referral will also be submitted to school administration where further consequences may be given. Students who damage or steal property will be required to replace the items. They will also receive a written referral that will be submitted to school administration. Depending on the situation, police involvement may be required. In all cases of cheating, plagiarizing, and the destruction/theft of property , citizenship grades will be negatively impacted.
Why is this such a big deal?
Mrs. Garcia believes that honesty and integrity is an essential part of a successful education. While it is perfectly fine for students to collaborate and work together as they learn, the expectation is that each student will make their own contribution to the class, and take responsibility for their own learning. In this way, students will learn how to solve problems for themselves and be better contributors to society as a whole.
For the students, violating these rules can have serious immediate consequences that will negatively impact their experience in the classroom. Incidents involving cheating, plagiarizing and the destruction/theft of property will result in lower academic and citizenship grades on a student's permanent record. Additionally, it can impact a student's ability to participate in promotion activities, including field trips, the promotion ceremony and the promotion dance, as well as athletic teams and other on-campus activities.
